Lares and Penates Dancing in House Shrine in Pompeii

In the atrium, in the main entrance of the domus, there was the lararium –an altar dedicated to the home gods, lares (spirits of the family ancestors) and penates (guardians of the stock of food)-; these gods received every morning an offering. In general the lararium consisted in a niche or hollow or a wooden board with pictures or small statues of these spirits and some times it was represented by a temple in miniature. Garden at Villa Julia, Pompeii

''Felix" was a common slave name and suggests that Julia Felix was a freed slave. The grand villa of this enterprising woman took up a whole city block in Pompeii amd was subdivided into several commercial establishments that contributed to her income. A sign painted outside her property stated that "In the estate of Julia Felix are located a luxurious bathing establishment, shops, pergolas, and lodgings, all for rent." This photo of the peristyle and garden of her villa shows a long, deep piscina that is more elaborate than the simple fishpond of Cornelius's country villa; Julia's fishpond runs down the center of the hortus and is crossed by several stone bridges. At intervals it widens into pairs of curved bays (one is shown here) that provided safe retreats for eels or fish that were raised in it.
